CMLC is moving to the Hillier Block. Our old digs, the Simmons Building, are open to new possibility.
Things move fast in East Village. On April 13th. CMLC is packing up from our award-winning headquarters in the historic Simmons Building on Confluence Way SE and moving to the equally historic Hillier Block 429 8th Avenue SE. The Hillier began life as a true mixed-use building, with a billiards hall and barber shop on the ground floor and rental residences above. In the past year, CMLC has shored up the ‘bones‘ of the building, which was sagging badly – a long ago fire had left a hole in its roof. Now the ‘skin’ of the building has also been repaired and beautified to its original state, with dark wood panel on the facade that would be very much like the original.
The Hillier has a brand new heart, too – it will be heated by the new District Energy system, which is headquartered in a new facility on 9th Avenue opposite the King Eddy hotel.
The newly-vacated Simmons Building, which famously began life as a mattress factory, will become a very special kind of community gathering place, one for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. That’s all we can say right now, but expect The Simmons to continue to be an East Village landmark – even if you can’t buy a mattress there.
Never been inside The Simmons? Join us April 22nd and 29th for a special yoga series by Jeff Mah, One More Breath.
