The DI Spirit

EV had the best Spirit Hub at the Scotiabank Marathon, and we were happy to donate our $2,000 prize to our neighbours at the Drop-In Centre.

If you think running the Calgary Scotiabank marathon is hard, ask DI Executive Director Debbie Newman (shown here with CMLC CEO Michael Brown) what it’s like running the Drop-In Centre in East Village. The DI team runs a totally different kind of marathon with as much stamina and heart as the runners completing the 42.7 km. route that wound through EV for the first time on May 27 of this year. East Village celebrated our inclusion in the 2012 marathon with an irresistible Spirit Hub outside the EV Sales and Experience Centre on Riverfront Avenue, and we were rewarded for our efforts with a $2,000 cheque from Marathon sponsors. In the spirit of sharing, the prize went to DI, whose volunteers joined some 60 others from East Village Master Developer CMLC and Lululemon.

Frankly, our Spirit Hub was hard to beat. Runners were buoyed by the bright orange balloons that festooned the site, the expert water cup handoffs, and the signs prepared by Lululemonites, which included motivating messages like ‘Ryan Gosling is at the finish line. Get there first.’ Also ‘Chafe now. Brag Forever.’ ‘Your feet hurt so much because you’re kicking butt.’ And the excellent ‘I got up super early to make this sign.’ Volunteers used every trick in the book to keep runners moving, from the posters to noise makers and non-stop music. CMLC laid on breakfast and lunch for the cheerleaders.
