When Calgary’s new Central Library opens its doors on November 1st, another chapter will be complete in the East Village master plan, and a new era of EV living will begin. Residents’ book collections will grow by hundreds of thousands. There will be another spot to pick up lunch and coffee, and more ways than ever to connect with community.
To mark the library’s 7-day countdown, we’ve called out our top 7 NCL highlights. Read on, and tell us what you’re most looking forward to at the new Central Library!
Summer came and went in Calgary faster than roll cakes fly off the shelves at Mari Bakeshop – and that’s really fast. But we refuse to let mother nature take autumn away from us when we haven’t even sipped a pumpkin spiced latte yet. Before we blink and fall is officially gone, take advantage of crunchy leaf walks and all the cozy goodness autumn has to offer. We’ve lined up a how-to guide for spending the perfect fall day in EV – scroll down, get out that plaid flannel shirt, and start making plans!
An exciting and unique riverside project broke ground in East Village today. Construction is now officially underway for XYC Design + Development's M2 – a mixed-use development that will become next-door neighbour to community staple, the Simmons building. The project will bring more dining options to RiverWalkers, plus office space and residential.
The east side is getting a lot more artsy! The most recent addition to our Art in the Public Realm Program will bring a painted mural to the walls of the 4th St. SE Underpass.
'Corridor of Connection' is a vibrant artwork by local artist Michelle Hoogveld that tells a visual story of the history and imagined future of EV and east Victoria Park – the communities that are connected by the underpass.
Ready for round two? East Village Junction is back and better than ever for 2018! Our pop-up retail container park debuted last summer, turning an empty lot next to Studio Bell into a thriving cultural corner, the likes of which Calgarians had never seen before. Now we’re gearing up to do it all again, bringing back some retailer favourites from last summer plus an exciting new mix of container-dwellers.
What’s the best part about the Olympics? Some say the athleticism, others say the ceremonies – we think it’s the Games’ ability to bring people together. So with the Olympic spirit in heart and mind, we decided to bring our favourite part of this international sporting event to East Village; not through sport (you won’t be seeing any ski slopes in the community) but with our Olympics wishing wall.
East Village is looking ahead with 20/20 vision: a future-forward parkade is scheduled to be completed in the neighbourhood in fall 2020. This isn’t just any old run-of-the-mill parkade though. The 5-level building has been designed to allow for full structure conversion, and will feature an innovation centre for Calgarians.
