A cosmic element shapes the new album, teetering on psychedelic folk and a balladry of melodic storytelling.

St. Louis Hotel Throwback Horse Racing

St. Louis Hotel Throwback Horse Racing

St. Louis Hotel (430 8 Ave SE)

Enjoy a Friday afternoon lunch of chicken and chips at the St. Louis Hotel, just like it was 1985 again.

For nearly two decades, until the early 2000s, St. Louis regular George Stephenson would frequent the local watering hole every Friday at noon with his friends and coworkers, successfully convincing everyone to not go back to work. They would play imaginary "horse races" – writing horse names on a napkin, each choosing a horse, then listening to George’s animated telling of the horse race made up on the spot. The game eventually caught the next table’s attention, and the next, and the next, before finally engulfing the entire bar with George yelling out the race details through a microphone at the front.

On May 31, Best of Calgary is bringing back indoor horse racing so that you too can participate and be part of the tradition.

What better way to wrap up the Best of Calgary lab series than with your very own vintage horse race experience in a historic Calgary landmark? The race will be hosted by Dave Kelly and feature guest announcers. Enjoy a couple of brews and a tasty meal of chicken and chips while you try your luck at the races.

Find tickets on eventbrite.ca under ‘St. Louis Hotel Throwback Horse Racing’.

RiverWalk Public Art Info Session

St. Louis Hotel (430 8 Ave SE)

Do you have a connection to East Village and want to get involved in our next public art installation? Local artist Katie Green invites you to attend an information session on April 13th to learn about how you can actually be IN the artwork she’s creating!

Katie was recently selected by a volunteer community art committee as the next artist to bring fresh new art to RiverWalk this summer. In this fourth iteration of the temporary installation series that began in 2010, community residents, business owners and other East Villagers will have the opportunity to participate in the process.

The new artwork, entitled Bridge, will adorn RiverWalk’s flyover and bridge abutments, storage shed and outdoor bathroom for the next 36 months. This installation will engage the different community groups of East Village in a series of mask-making workshops designed to investigate empowerment through anonymity. Following the workshops, participants will be photographed wearing their masks in spaces around East Village. These photographs will be the foundation of a work that explores self, community, and our inner and outer worlds.
