Block Party Comes to East Village

East Village has become the newest venue in the increasingly-epic Sled Island Festival that’s coming to more than 30 of the best places in town June 20 to 23. From Olympic Plaza to the Ironwood Stage to Theatre Junction GRAND – and now EV’s very own Simmon’s Building – the festival is spreading the indie music goodness of more than 300 artists far and wide.

The Simmons Building is festival headquarters from June 15 to June 23; it’s the place where festival-goers can pick up wristbands and programs. It’s also, perhaps even more importantly, the site of the East Village Block Party on Thursday June 21 starting at 4 pm.

TEDxYYC Parties!

TEDxYYC Parties!

At TEDxYYC on May 25, great ideas will spread. At the TEDx afterparty in East Village, ideas, and the libations that fuel them, will flow.

Didn’t get into TEDxYYC on May 25 at Telus Spark? You know, the one with Sir Nicholas Kenyon of the Barbican Centre, Moeed Ahmad of Al Jazeera, Christina Franco of Arctic adventure fame and...Raffi.  Don’t worry. The after-event in East Village will keep the conversation going  at our very own Simmons building.

We’re providing the space, YYC food trucks the munchies, Village Brewery the beer, and Sled Island the live music, with local acts Lab Coast, Extra Happy Ghost!!! and a guest DJ adding to the atmosphere.

Yoga in the Village

Yoga in the Village

Celebrate spring with community yoga classes starting April 22.

We are breathing new life into East Village this spring and summer with Yoga in the Village – a free community yoga program in partnership with Lululemon and some of Calgary’s leading yoga practitioners.

Reconnect with East Village through a series of community events and classes commencing this month and running throughout the summer.  Classes will be hosted in the historic Simmons Building and on the RiverWalk Outlooks –one of Calgary’s most tranquil settings along the mighty Bow River.

Artists Show at Simmons

Artists Show at Simmons

The Federation of Canadian Artists celebrates its 30 Year Anniversary with a Calgary Artwalk show right here in EV.

The Anniversary Show will exhibit artwork by professional and semi-professional members of the Calgary Chapter of the federation. With more than 100 artists in its ranks, the group encourages education and professional growth among members, and hosts juried shows and exhibitions year round.

Calgary Rocks the 'Walk

Calgary Rocks the 'Walk

On one of the sunniest days of summer, RiverWalk celebrated its grand opening. And hundreds of Calgarians loved their ‘Walk.

It was the kind of day that RiverWalk was built for – a hot, cloudless Saturday in August. The city’s newest urban promenade, at the edge of the Bow River in the heart of East Village, was the perfect host for Calgarians of all ages and interests during Rock the ‘Walk, the official opening celebration of RiverWalk’s first phase. Curious locals turned out to see what had become of East Village, and many were wide-eyed in surprise. “It’s beautiful!” people said, blinking in the sunlight.

EV With Boots On

EV With Boots On

At the 99th Stampede, East Village neighbours put on the city's favourite party. Here's the report.

EV was in Stampede from the first moments. The parade staging grounds were right outside the windows of The Simmons Building, so the CMLC team of master developers had the ultimate back stage pass for the opening event. Which meant that we got a sneak peek of the float that took two major awards – Best Overall Entry and Best Entry by a Business or Non-Profit. The winner was none other than EV’s own National Music Centre, the soon-to-be-cultural and entertainment hub that’s coming to the area around the King Eddy.
