With almost 20 food trucks plus the Bass Bus rumbling into East Village for a celebration of Calgary-style street food, foodies in the know showed up in droves, and hungry.
“Got my toque, warm mitts and socks. I'm ready,” declared one hardy adventurer. The trucks were ready too. Tantalizing aromas began to waft through the frosty air as mobile ovens fired up. Hungry food truck followers huddled around well-placed heaters that warded off the unseasonable chill as they waited for piping hot culinary creations. “This is called drinking chocolate. It's amazing!” marvelled Shannon as she wrapped mittened hands around a steaming cup of richness.
With plenty of seating inside the Simmons building, noshers were able to sample their choices in toasty comfort. Many brave souls stayed outdoors, though, where they let the hot beats emanating from the Bass Buss keep their toes warm and tapping. We are a winter country, after all.
If all that tasty food wasn't exciting enough, Friday afternoon's smoking hot rivalry fanned the flames of friendly food truck competition with a mystery ingredient throwdown. Thirteen trucks participated in a challenge to make the most delectable dish for a panel of celebrity judges, using pumpkin, cranberries, and that perennial favourite, bacon. The competition was blistering as trucks stoked up their creativity to vie for cash prizes and a coveted gold "Feasty" license plate.
Vasili's won the $1000 gold prize with their sinfully good chocolate pumpkin cheesecake in a bacon graham crust. “This made the chilly walk over so worth it,” moaned one food fan as she tucked into her slice of the prize winner. Second place was spooned up by Red Wagon Diner and third by Sticky Ricky’s.
