Calgary, opera captial? Yes, we are, not least because we have one of the best Emerging Artists schools in the country. Luckily for us, some of the school's most talented students and alumni are taking to EV's marvelous natural stage, RiverWalk Plaza, on July 22, August 12 & 19 at 4pm. The program will include famous duets and beloved arias from popular operas, just the thing for a summer afternoon - The Barber of Seville, La Boheme, Don Giovanni - including 'O mio babbino caro', Figaro's famous 'Largo' from Barber of Seville [made famous in the Bugs Bunny cartoon. Remember? "Come into my shop. Let me cut your mop..."] and the stirring duet from The Pearlfishers.
Mel Kirby, pianist and co-ordinator for the Emerging Artist Development Program, says the students don't often sing outside and will be mic'd for the occasion. Kirby will be on keyboard and there will be orchestral backing tracks, so expect plenty of variety and texture to the sound. Local opera fans can look forward to seeing hometown favourite, soprano Natalie Fagnan, who will be accompanied by tenor Derek Johnson and baritone John Conton.
It will be a top-notch show. So bring a lawn chair and come hungry - the first 200 guests will be treated to a delicious cream puff from House of Cruffs. The free show starts at 4pm. See you there.
