Women of Yoga, Rise!

Join the stretch mob at the Wheel of Women Yoga Night on July 15! You’ll honour influential women from Calgary’s history while giving a hand up to women in Calgary today.

Held from 7:30-8:30pm on the newly opened Wheel of Women plaza on RiverWalk, the yoga class will commemorate the opening of a thought-provoking new public space, while benefitting Bow Valley College’s “1000 Women Rising” campaign.

Wheel of Women is an interpretive spherical pathway at the heart of the Crossroads in East Village, a place where three major pedestrian paths intersect: the Jack and Jean Leslie RiverWalk™, the diagonally zagging Riff, and the 6th Street Edges project that delineates East Village from Fort Calgary. The massive circular plaza (with a 50-metre radius) is made of large basalt tiles, many of which are etched with the names of historical female leaders of Calgary – movers and shakers who built communities and shaped our civic thinking in education, art, placemaking and development.

Admission to Wheel of Women Yoga Night is by donation to Bow Valley College’s “1000 Women Rising” campaign, and all contributions will be matched by CMLC. “1000 Women Rising” aims to raise $1 million to help female students overcome barriers to learning by assisting with financial and childcare subsidies. Since more than three-quarters of BVC students are women, many of whom are newcomers to Canada currently learning to speak English, the challenges these students face in juggling school, jobs and families are enormous.
