Pumpkin Power

Autumn lovers and fans of farmers markets couldn’t have asked for a more perfectly crisp October day to enjoy East Village's first outdoor fall market on Riverfront Lane October 12.

Urban shoppers and seniors mingled with university students home for Thanksgiving, and couples on first dates stopped to chat to families with toddlers and dogs in tow. The autumn nip in the air matched the crispness of the apples handed out by vendors.

“Everybody wants coffee today,” smiled the Phil & Sebastian barista, as he handed over a steaming cup of java on the front deck of the East Village Experience Centre/pop-up coffee shop. “It's been a great day for business.” It was a great day for sampling comforting fall fare from the four food trucks that lined Riverfront Avenue too. And it was an especially good day to scoop up fresh fall produce. “Look at the huge bag of Pacific Galas I bought!” laughed one shopper as she waved a large bag of apples in the air. “They’re so sweet and crunchy I couldn't resist.”

Over at the pumpkin patch, not many people could resist the cute little pumpkins waiting for adoption either. Just the right size to be scooped up by little hands, the mini pumpkins, donated by the Jungle Farm, were a big hit with the junior set. While Rotary Park kept toes tapping with sweet bluegrass harmonies, youngsters climbed on hay bales and selected their favourite gourds to bring home. All proceeds from the pumpkin patch go toward rebuilding the Calgary Zoo, so the adopted pumpkins will keep that warm fuzzy Thanksgiving feeling alive long after they’ve finished decorating festive fall tables.

From pumpkins to puppies, bluegrass music to flash mob dance performances, vendor stalls to food trucks, East Village’s outdoor harvest and artisan market offered something for all shoppers and walkers to enjoy on a perfect fall day. And with pumpkin donations benefitting the Calgary Zoo and one lucky urban explorer taking home a fabulous $100 Thanksgiving gift basket, there was something for everybody to be thankful for.
