Pirates Draws Closer!

Hold on to your three-corner hats! The pirates are arriving on RiverWalk.

Pirates of Penzance and a flurry of operatic fun and games drops anchor on RiverWalk in East Village August 22-25, and you don’t want to miss it. The events are all part of Opera in the Village, Calgary’s newest festival and the first outdoor summer festival in Canada.

There’ll be main stage performances of Pirates, pirate-themed movie nights, a children’s summer opera camp performance, picnic, epic amateur singing competition, fight demonstrations and much more.

Pirates is, of course, the beloved Gilbert and Sullivan story of Frederic, Mabel, Ruth, Major-General Stanley, the pirate king, love and the follies of duty. This light and funny Victorian opera never tires, and in a purpose-built 900-person tent on RiverWalk with stars like Brett Polegato as the Pirate King, Tracy Dahl as Mabel and Colin Ainsworth as Frederic, it’s guaranteed to please.

Around the performances are events like Arrrias in the Afternoon, where opera’s biggest hits will be sung on the banks of the Bow by talented alumni of Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Program.

On Sunday, August 25 from noon-2 pm, Palate 20 for 20, Sidewalk Citizen and River Café join forces to put on a picnic that sounds like a delicious thing to do before the show.

Calgary Opera’s Summer Opera Camp for kids 9-14 takes place at Fort Calgary, and the young talent will put on a mini version of Pirates during the festival.

A highlight will be the So you think you can sing Opera contest for amateurs.  First prize for the lucky winner is more opera, of course – seasons tickets to Calgary Opera’s 13/14 season, an opportunity to participate in select classes with Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist program, a position with the Calgary Opera Chorus for an opera production during the season and a trophy. If you think you have what it takes, this could be your big break!
