At Confluence Plaza on SPI, we've installed a curling sheet that'll have you ready for the Scotties or Brier in no time. The single sheet of synthetic ice is 10.7m x 2m, but don't be fooled - it acts like real, slippery ice! It's the perfect surface for sliding your rocks towards the house for a win. There are eight rocks that you can divvy up into teams, or use solo to hone your skills.
The East Village highlight reel for 2016 is truly unforgettable – it includes drama and art, green space and great architecture. From marking major milestones to celebrating daily life, EV revelled in a literal and figurative groundbreaking year. Today, East Village is burgeoning with places to stay, places to play, and places to indulge in a little pampering. Gardens bloom, music soars, and new art greets neighbours and visitors. With each tick of the to-do list, Calgary’s blossoming urban village becomes ever more neighbourly and ever more grown up.
My year as East Village Resident Ambassador is over! The end of a busy, beautiful, life-altering year is, naturally, kind of a bummer. But mostly I’m overcome with gratitude for everything I got to experience in East Village and excitement about what the future holds for this neighbourhood. As I’ve looked back at the past year I’ve tried to distill my time as an East Villager. What does “East Village living” even mean? From my perspective, it can be summed up with three major themes.
We wanted to make sure that Zoey would come back soon to visit, so we’re giving her an EV Stay ‘n’ Play package to bring her back into our neck of the woods! You could win the exact same Stay ‘n’ Play package by following along with our scavenger hunt on Thursday, September 29.
I love hosting friends at my place. My go-to formula for a good time is: a sparkling punch + delicious array of snacks + people I like. Foolproof! The only downside is the inevitable scramble to tidy up my condo (AKA hide my laundry and mop the floor). Enter a solution: The condo lounge and courtyard.
Another historical building on Calgary’s original main street has been artfully restored in East Village. I think Calgarians are going to love how the St. Louis Hotel fits into the future of our city while preserving so much of the past. I was lucky enough to tour the building with Kevin and Mairi Nyhoff, the architects behind the reinvention, and Josh Sartorelli, CMLC’s Project Manager for Development. They taught me all kinds of things about how the old features of the building have been upgraded and enhanced for today.
East Village Master Developer CMLC has moved headquarters by trading one historical landmark for another. The team has gone from the historic Hillier Block on 8 Ave. SE to the historic St. Louis Hotel right across the street. Before setting up shop in Hillier Block, CMLC occupied yet another heritage building that was restored and renovated – the historic Simmons Building on the bank of the Bow, now EV’s favourite gathering/noshing headquarters.
All summer long, CMLC is hosting an EV Neighbourhood Series in 5th Street Square, right in the heart of our village. From board games to bingo, brunching to dancing, there are fun-for-all activities happening in July and August. Whether you’re brand new to the neighbourhood, not here yet but coming soon, or one of the original EV pioneers, 5th Street Square is the place to get together and show off your skills.
In celebration of Studio Bell opening in East Village on July 1, we’re resurrecting stories of one of Calgary’s most iconic heritage buildings - plus giving away VIP passes to the Bell Live Series at the King Eddy.
