St. Patrick’s Island, a 31-acre park space neighbouring the Calgary Zoo, is undergoing a transformation that will turn this under-utilized park space into a destination for all Calgarians’ to enjoy. In May, the island revitalization will kick-off with a BioBlitz, a 24-hour survey of all living species on the island.

A BioBlitz is a kind of “living treasure hunt” where the object is to find and identify plants, animals, insects and everything else that calls the island home. Scientists and experts from the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and the Calgary Naturalist’s Society will band together to rapidly establish a baseline of life forms on the island. Then, when the new island park is completed and restored with historical plant species, we’ll discover which new birds, mammals and insects have been attracted to the island.

“There could be anywhere from 200 to 2000 species on St. Patrick’s Island,” says Steven Handel, BioBlitz organizer for CMLC. “We’re all familiar with the balsam poplar trees and the dozens of bird species, but I expect more than a few surprises!”

Volunteers of all ages, interests and ranges of expertise are encouraged to participate.

We must defend our title as the 2012 Community Spirit Hub winners for 2013!

The Marathon is back! Don't worry, we aren't asking you to dust off your runners, how about you dust off your vocal cords instead?

Last year was the first time the Calgary Marathon came through East Village, it was exciting to see 15,000 runners stampede through our community, and what was even more thrilling? Working together to cheer them on & welcome them to the new East Village. We did such a great job we actually won the Community Spirit Award and earned $2,500 for our neighbourhood charity The Calgary Drop In Centre.

However, 2013 is a whole new year and we think we have a great shot at winning again, but only with your help! We need YOU to paint posters, shake pompoms, blow whistles, cheer, clap, dance and shout to keep East Village’s community spirit alive!

Think you have what it takes? Join us at the East Village Experience Centre May 26th starting at 7 AM. It sure is early, but don’t worry we’ll have coffee and goodies to keep you going! The competition is steep amongst the rival communities this year, so help us remain the neighbourhood to beat in year two!

East Village Experience Centre is located at 553 Riverfront Ave. SE

EV will have the beginning of the marathoners and half marathoners trickling through starting at 7:20 AM. Waves of 10k runners will pass by at 7:55 AM, and the return of the half marathoners at 8:15 AM, and full marathoners at 9:50 AM. 5K comes past our spirit hub around noon!

East Village hosts Canada's first outdoor summer opera festival

Swashbuckling, swordfighting, melodrama and leitmotif - it's all part of Canada's very first outdoor summer opera festival, to be held right here in East Village.

Opera connoisseurs, festival fans and Saturday morning cartoon lovers - those who once warbled along with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd - leapt to their feet for a standing ovation on March 27 when Calgary Opera announced the launch of Canada's very first outdoor summer opera festival.

Opera in the Village - a four day extravaganza on the banks of the Bow River - will feature six performances under a 10,000 square foot open air tent, with swashbuckling action bursting out all across RiverWalk Plaza. Best of all, those swords will be clashed and those arias will be sung right here in East Village.

From August 22 - 25, 2013, RiverWalk will be transformed into a Cornish beach, complete with pirates and scallywags, as Opera in the Village presents The Pirates of Penzance for the festival's maiden voyage. An all-star cast of Canadian opera royalty will bring Gilbert & Sullivan's beloved pirate romp to life under the big white tent. Along the banks of the Bow, an intermezzo of sword-fighting demonstrations, pop-up opera performances and pirate movies projected onto the wall of the Simmons Building will provide a libretto sure to shiver the timbers of buccaneers and landlubbers alike. And avast ye - thar'll be food trucks.

There's even a two-week opera camp for mini privateers, aged 9-14. Budding sopranos and baritones will give the pros a run for their money by performing their own free public production of The Pirates of Penzance at the culmination of opera camp.

Whether or not Johnny Depp shows up, Canada's first outdoor summer opera festival is destined to become a bucket list destination for opera aficionados from around the world. So perch that parrot on your shoulder, slap on an eye patch and some eyeliner, and strut your pirate stuff down to East Village this August for Opera in the Village's flagship production of The Pirates of Penzance. Ahoy!

Tickets go on sale April 22. To get them, go to www.calgaryopera.com/arghh
