Think Tank

Think Tank

There’s something new happening in the Embassy BOSA section of the East Village Experience Centre. And it’s not what you might expect.

Embassy BOSA’s has transformed the space into a “Think Tank’ – a place where people can share their thoughts about their ideal community and what’s important to them. These valuable insights will help shape not only Embassy BOSA’s newest project Arris, but future developments as well.

No stranger to East Village, Embassy BOSA has been gathering feedback over the past few years informally at the EV Experience Centre while selling their most recent EV project Evolution (which is nearing completion!). The new Think Tank formalizes this process into a digital survey to allow for more in-depth questions and insights.

Modern Nature

Modern Nature

Local Calgary artist, Curtis Van Charles Sorensen was awarded the contract to create the next temporary art installation on RiverWalk. Wildlife, get ready for your close-up

Sorensen’s art – which will grace three bridge abutments, two public washrooms and a maintenance shed – pays tribute to the animals and natural spaces woven through Calgary’s urban environment. He’ll create larger-than-life, hyper-real depictions of animals in nature using a mix of acrylic painting and digital photography, and incorporate architectural elements of East Village and the downtown core. Sorensen says he hopes that the dreamlike realism of his wildlife paintings will encourage passersby to reflect on the value of natural spaces in the city.

Paint + digital photos will bring modern nature to RiverWalk in the next chapter of CMLC’s Art in the Public Realm program.

The as-yet-unnamed exhibition – the third temporary instalment of public art along RiverWalk – will enliven the pedestrian pathway for two years after its installation this September.

Groundbreaking and Groceries

Groundbreaking and Groceries

A new $500 million development brings a community grocery store, convenience and other necessities of life to EV.

On April 13, two key partners are breaking ground on a collaborative development project that gives East Villagers more of what we love – namely, an incredibly desirable place to live, with all the amenities residents will need close to home.

The project – which will inject $500 million development dollars into Calgary’s struggling economy – is a collaboration between commercial real estate giant RioCan and Embassy BOSA, a major force in multifamily residential development here in Calgary.

Occupying a full city block, it comprises two spectacular residential towers totalling approximately 500+
condominium homes and an urban format ‘retail podium’ that brings 188,000 square feet of leasable retail space to the neighbourhood’s street level.

Do you have a knack for spotting trends, are an avid user of technology and social media and enjoy attending a variety of festivals and events? If yes, then we want to hear from you!

Hello Gorgeous!

Hello Gorgeous!

In East Village, new retail is following hot on the heels of our new residents – some 600 people since last year! The Simmons, with its great food and coffee, is already the de facto community hangout. And in 2016, construction will begin on more new shops and services. But the leader and very first new service retailer in EV is the Merle Norman salon, which opened Saturday, March 5, in the FIRST condominium building at the corner of 6 Ave. and 5 St. SE.

Zoey's Sneak Peek of Studio Bell

Zoey's Sneak Peek of Studio Bell

I’d heard it was award-winning and had an inkling it would become an iconic part of Calgary’s skyline, but it wasn’t until I toured Studio Bell that I really got it. Studio Bell, a $191-million project set to open this summer in East Village, will be home to the National Music Centre as well as a stunning 300-seat performance space, three recording studio spaces, a new CKUA radio station, an education centre and classrooms, a Cafe Rosso coffee shop and the artfully restored King Eddy Hotel.

CSquare: A Cause (and place) for Celebration!

C-Square (short for Celebration Square) is an urban square built on a quirky piece of land in East Village that I’d never noticed before. Now, it’s an active, artistic public space that looks good day and night. The little plaza’s artfully crafted wooden benches, open spaces and veil of metal flags on 4th Street (Riverfront Lane) and 6th & 7th Avenues S.E. live right along the C-Train line.
